M's Need 11 Innings To Top A's In 2012 Opener
The Mariners topped the Athletics 3-1 in 11 innings on Wednesday morning in the first game of the 2012 season.
Ichiro Suzuki had four hits as the two teams kicked things off in Tokyo, Japan.
"It was very special to open in Japan," he said. "I wanted to have fun and give the fans something at this special time and wanted to share a special moment with them."
Seattle's Dustin Ackley homered and singled in the go-ahead run.
Darvish Won't Face Angels This Weekend
Yu Darvish will not face the Angels this weekend.
Darvish is currently part of a six-man rotation and will pitch five innings as planned, but he'll do it Sunday morning in Surprise Stadium against some Rangers minor leaguers in an intrasquad game.
If Texas stays on their current rotation alignment, Darvish would pitch fourth behind Colby Lewis, Derek Holland and Matt Harrison.
Posey's First Spring Hit A Home Run
Buster Posey homered in his third at-bat Wednesday against the Indians, driving a Tony Sipp fastball the opposite way just inside the right-field foul pole. It was Posey's first hit since the injury to his left ankle May 25.
"I thought I hit it pretty good," he said with a smile. "I'm just glad I hit it hard. That's the goal every time."
Cespedes Struggles After Strong Debut
Yoenis Cespedes struggled in his second Major League exhibition game after thrilling in his debut.
He went hitless in three at-bats with a walk in Oakland's 10-8 win over Kansas City on Sunday. A day earlier, he homered and hit another RBI.
"I thought he had some decent at-bats," manager Bob Melvin said. "He didn't have the results he had yesterday, but I think we can give him a break. We were probably all expecting him to get three more hits and hit a couple home runs, but he looks good up there. They threw him some good pitches."
The Athletics signed him to a four-year, $36 million contract earlier this month.
Bautista Clubs First Home Run Of Spring
Jose Bautista hit his first home run of the spring in Toronto's 5-2 win over Houston on Saturday.
"It's definitely something I wasn't thinking about. It wasn't really in my head, so it wasn't like I was looking for it," Bautista said.
"Sometimes you have a good swing and hit it hard but it doesn't go up in the air enough and sometimes you do and I just think that's what happened today," he said. "I'm not trying to lead spring training in home runs."
Bautista is reigning two-time Major League home run leader.
Braun Homers For First Hit Of Spring
Ryan Braun's first hit of the 2012 exhibition season was a two-run home run in Milwaukee's 8-6 loss to Cincinnati.
Braun had been 0-for-5 before homering in the third inning on Thursday.
Darvish Good As Advertised In Spring Debut
Rangers pitcher Yu Darvish did a little bit of everything in his first two innings of spring training.
He got three strikeouts, showing nice movement on his pitches. He gave up two doubles, discovering what major league hitters do to fastballs up in the strike zone.
The 25-year-old threw his seven-pitch repertoire and got his first chance to see what opposing hitters do with his pitches.
Swarm Of Bees Delays Giants, D-Backs
The Diamondbacks' field crew used a combination of cotton candy and lemonade to help disperse a swarm of bees that delayed the San Francisco Giants split squad's 11-1 win over Arizona for 41 minutes in the second inning Sunday, according to an Associated Press report.
